Thumbing through family photo albums or scrolling through my photos, mothers are often absent. I’m not in the photos – I’m taking them. My mother and grandmother are similarly missing from documents of our childhoods. Yet our shadows appear, evidence of our presence. We exist! We are not gone. We are here, ever hovering with the camera, with a snack, with a wipe. I still cast a shadow.
